Niki in a nutshell

  • I’m from  Philadelphia, PA

  • My education  Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA and a Master of Architecture from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY

  • Notable accomplishments/awards  I designed the 4' tall gingerbread house in the Elmendorf Cafe storefront in winter 2020 :-).

  • Why PCA?  The focus on equity & inclusion really drew me in!

  • My earliest design memory  Stacking tupperware in my parents' kitchen

  • I’m drawn to design because  my 4th grade claim to fame was how I'd learned HTML and CSS just so I could design Neopets webpages for my friends at school. Now they ask me to help them pick out paint colors.

  • A place that has affected me is  Hiking through Iceland; some of the terrain is totally alien and the scale of it makes you feel like you're on another planet.

  • Materials that excite me are  ones that are sourced sustainably, reused or provide a benefit to the community in which they're used.

  • I’m excited about building technology that  consumes less!

  • What is the nerdiest thing you do in your spare time?  I've gotten pretty into mechanical keyboards. There are so many things to customize, from the aesthetic to how keys sound and feel when you press them. It's kind of like LEGO, but with circuit boards!

  • Favorite place in Inman Sq (that’s not the PCA Office)  You can find me with a Clover hibiscus iced tea most days out of the summer.

  • Coffee or tea?  I drink coffee to wake up but enjoy gong fu style tea brewing to relax with friends.

  • On my playlist:  2000's pop punk/emo a la Panic! at the Disco or Paramore

  • The best gift I ever gave  I designed a tabletop pinball machine for a friend in college. I lasercut the base out of basswood, and 3D printed all of the moving parts.

  • Favorite book  A genre-spanning tie right now between Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen) and Gideon the Ninth (Tamsyn Muir)

  • If you could snap your fingers and become an expert in something, what would it be?  Baking perfect macarons every time
