Last week, a group of 10 PCA volunteers engaged with the Somerville Backpack Program to help in their weekly effort to provide Somerville students with nutritious meals for the weekend. On a Friday morning, the group tackled a variety of tasks, from making sandwiches, filling bags with carrots, and packing over 200 lunch bags with healthy snacks.
Each year the Somerville Backpack Program provides bags of food to students at 9 of the 11 Somerville Public Schools every Friday. Partnering with Food for Free, the program supplements the school meals that students rely on during the week, but don’t always have access to over the weekend. It’s a great volunteering opportunity in the local community.
